The GH5s is a very pleasant case to use, but also responsive in most situations. Supported by DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology, the hybrid inherits the module already integrated in the G9 and GH5 , namely a 255-point system, offering the possibility of activating face recognition and subject tracking.
The GH5s is equipped with a 4/3 ”sensor of 10.7 Mpx, against 20.3 Mpx for the GH5 . We were curious to observe the behavior of a 10 Mpx sensor in photos in 2018 and we have to admit that we are a little disappointed by the performance of the GH5s in this area. The housing delivers a beautiful image quality between 100 and 400 ISO. However, a granulation is already perceptible at 800 ISO and logically increases with the rise in ISO sensitivity. Images at ISO 1600 are still clean, but this sensitivity can be achieved easily with the 4/3 ”20 MP sensors. Here we can climb to 3,200, or even 6,400 ISO, ie 1 EV more than with other 4/3 ”sensors. Beyond that, electronic noise is essential and the images are more difficult to use.
Ergonomically, the Panasonic Lumix GH5s closely resembles the GH5 , built on the same magnesium alloy chassis with an all-weather weatherproof finish. The back of this imposing hybrid does not change and we find the joystick, practical, the encoder wheel, as well as the various controls for autofocus, playback and the quick menu.
Panasonic is renewing the 3,680,000-point Oled viewfinder which, unlike the GH5, is no longer limited to 60 fps but capable of climbing to 120 fps, for better fluidity. As for the multi-touch touch screen, still with a diagonal of 8.1 cm (3.2 ") displaying 1,620,000 points, it provides a real user-friendliness for navigating in the menus, carrying out the point. with your fingertips or read the images. Also rotatable on the ball joint, it facilitates aiming, especially in video.
The GH5s uses the same battery as the GH5, namely the 14 Wh (7.2 V / 1860 mAh) DMW-BLF19E. In classic mode, the battery life is approximately 440 frames and it is not possible to charge the device directly via the USB-C port. A power saving mode exists to automatically turn off the LCD screen / viewfinder and reduce power consumption.
The hybrid has two memory card slots compatible with the UHS-II transfer bus and offers different recording options. In terms of connectivity, it offers the classic range: stereo microphone input, headphone output, USB 3 Type-C output, remote control socket, HDMI UHD / 4K Type-A output, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Like the GH5, the GH5s also benefits from a 1/8000 s mechanical shutter and an electronic shutter that climbs to 1/16000 s. In the latter mode, the triggering is completely silent.
Physically, the GH5s is therefore very close to the GH5. It is mainly distinguished by its features specific to video mode.
